Petition to Israeli, Palestinian & international leaders:

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict lies at the heart of a global clash threatening to divide us all. People from every corner of the world want a just and lasting peace in the Middle East - and the international community can and must help bring all sides to the table. Start Real Middle East Talks Now,

and stay at the negotiating table until we have peace!

Runoff election Zimbabwe

Samstag, 28. Juni 2008

Turnout was reported to be very light in many locations while in others reports said militia of the ruling ZANU-PF party forced voters to go to the polls. Some reports said police and other officials looked over voters’ shoulders to make sure they voted for Mr. Mugabe.

Epworth, Harare, voter Jason said he voted just to get his fingers inked to avoid being beaten by ZANU-PF militia demanding proof from residents they had voted. He said ruling party officials sought to determine how he voted.

Bulawayo correspondent Netsai Mlilo of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe said some residents decided to vote late in the day after ZANU-PF militants threatened violence against anyone without red ink on their hands as evidence they went to the polls and cast a ballot.

Moyo told reporter Patience Rusere that his organization had gathered information suggesting that non-residents had been bused into Bulawayo to cast ballots there.

Amnesty has called on the African Union and SADC (Southern African Development Community) to apply the "necessary pressure" on President Mugabe. "I think there's been some deafening silence by the AU assembly chairperson, (Tanzanian) President Kikwete, in terms of denouncing the violence that has been ongoing in Zimbabwe. And for starters, we would want to see him coming up with a very strong statement condemning what is happening in Zimbabwe. And then secondly, there was a need to convene the AU's Peace and Security Council to consider the situation in Zimbabwe…. That has happened. And in that meeting, we would like to see the African Union coming out with a very strong position and sending a clear message to President Mugabe that what has been going on in Zimbabwe is unacceptable, since it goes against the principles of the African Union, which is respect for human rights and the rule of law," he says.

Has Mr. Mugabe been getting mixed signals from his southern African neighbors? Mawanza says, "Just recently, I think there [have] been some more united messages. But the people of Zimbabwe need to see effective African solidarity, beyond making excuses for President Mugabe and being too accommodative…. And if President Mugabe does not take heed of the advice that he's getting from his peers and colleagues in Africa, they need to go to the next level, which could even be considering suspending Zimbabwe from the African Union."

He says that such a suspension could hit Zimbabwe hard."

If you suspend Zimbabwe from the African Union, there are very few countries that can survive outside these international bodies. And I think it sends a very clear signal to the victims of human rights violations in Zimbabwe that Africa is with them. And if Zimbabwe does not then take heed of that measure, there are other considerations, which might as well include those sanctions. But at this stage, I think the African Union, particularly the chairperson, need to come up with a very strong position," he says.

Mawanza adds, "Amnesty's message to President Mugabe remains the same: that he has to end the violence that is going on in the country immediately. He has to make sure that all those perpetrators of violence are brought to justice. It includes those who are linked to his political party. And we will continue to mobilize international pressure until that happens. We are also calling for the immediate release of people who have been arrested because they are associated with the MDC or they're human rights activists."

These include Jenni Williams and Magodonga Mahlangu, who are leaders of WOZA, Women of Zimbabwe Arise. They've been detained since May 28th when they took part in a demonstration against election violence.

Stichwahlen in Simbabwe

Freitag, 27. Juni 2008

- Collage: Renate Siedentopf -

Candle in My Window - for Tibet

This will be our opening ceremony for the Olympic Games. And it will begin darkness falls in India on Thursday, Aug 7th 2008.

A GLOBAL VOTE FOR FREEDOM

In about 7 weeks, on the night before the Olympic flame will be lit in Beijing, at least 100 million people all over the world will light a candle for a free Tibet. That aggregate flame will be brighter and will call for freedom in Tibet and in any other place in the world. That is at least the vision of the organizers of "Candle in My Window for Tibet". They tagged this world event: "Our opening ceremony of the Olympic Games". Mr. Califa has recently volunteered to assist the organizers in carrying their message:"Take part in our Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. Light a candle for Tibet.

We will light a candle for Tibet because Tibet has become a symbol of freedom.
It is a symbol that represents the natural right of any human being for self determination, freedom of thought, conscience, belief and religion. Freedom is the most important value for us working for this movement.

The Olympic Games in Beijing is a unique opportunity to focus the world's attention on the annulment of those rights in Tibet and in many other places in the world. Lighting a candle represents solidarity with the people of Tibet. "Enlightenment" by Jamie Williams Each candle lit window is one more prayer of hope for the world to witness. This will be our opening ceremony for the Olympic Games. And it will begin darkness falls in India on Thursday, Aug 7th 2008. In this way we will ensure that our millions and millions of candles are seen and noticed throughout all the time zones of the world.

We are going to create a unique moment when so many millions who otherwise would do very little or nothing for Tibet, or any other cause, would actually do something spiritual and meaningful. And do it together. Our modest objective is to reach 100 million people.

The media, I have no doubt, will pick on the story soon, which will bring more participants, which will bring more coverage, and will raise awareness for the Tibetan Cause. It's a virtuous circle.

Zimbabwe Today

6. June 2008
Police ban Tsvangirai rallies (PA)

The Zimbabwean police have told Morgan Tsvangirai leader of the MDC that his party’s rallies have been banned indefinitely, throughout the country. Tsvangirai was stopped at a roadblock on his way to a rally and was told to return to Bulawayo. He was taken to Bulawayo under police escort. The police in Bulawayo questioned Tsvangirai for 25 minutes and then told him that all MDC rallies have been banned indefinitely. The police said that the rallies were banned out of fear for Tsvangirai and other leaders safety.

An MDC Press Release relayed news about the ban this way: The police have virtually banned MDC rallies, further crippling our campaign ahead of the run-off scheduled for 28 June 2008.

The police today banned rallies that were scheduled to be held in Harare’s high density townships of Glen Norah, Kambuzuma and Mufakose. Another rally that was scheduled for Chitungwiza at the Tennis Court has also been turned down, even though the police had earlier indicated it could go ahead.

Today, the police wrote to the MDC, saying our rallies cannot go ahead because the party has said that its leaders face elimination. The rallies, the police said, cannot proceed for the safety of the MDC leaders who have said Zanu PF thugs want to eliminate them.

This is rank madness. Coupled with the arrest today of President Morgan Tsvangirai in Esigodini in Matabeleland South, the latest act by the police shows that some of them have become complicit with the regime.

The MDC has no access to the public media and the only interaction we have with our members and supporters is through rallies. The latest act to ban our rallies is also unconstitutional as it infringes on people’s basic and inalienable freedoms of association and assembly.

The police have brazenly decided to side with Zanu PF. We have seen Robert Mugabe, his wife Grace and the dictator’s dwindling coterie of bootlickers addressing rallies in several parts of the country while those of the MDC are being curtailed. Whatever the antics of this regime, the end is nigh. Come 27 June, the people of Zimbabwe will reconfirm their vote. They will vote again for change, for food, for jobs and for the return of their dignity.
