Giant rat found in Johannesburg.
Suppose this will once again start heavy discussions concerning false or true as I've already experienced with my blog entry concerning Herkules the largest dog. This picture of the large rat in Johannesburg was sent to me and after doing some research, stumbled upon some interesting information. Yak - just the idea of this large rat crossing my way makes me shiver from head to toe!!

"I was having a braai and related my encounter ten years ago with a giant rat. I was working on the optics in the tunnels under the runways at Johannesburg International Airport as a network engineer. To me it looked like the size of a dog, not a Rhodesian Ridgeback but a Miniature Schnauzer. Everyone had a good laugh, and said it was a fishing story especially when I stated that after my initial shock I was even more paranoid about encountering the snake that eats rats of this size! I resorted to Google to prove my point. I discovered the giant African pouch rat. Some common (Norway) rats even grow to a size of 2.4 pounds! I think someone imported a large rat as a pet which then escaped and found a home in the tunnels."

The day of the giant rat

(Wikipedia) The Gambian Pouch Rat can grow to be as big as a raccoon and can weigh up to 4 kg. It has very poor eyesight and so depends on its senses of smell and hearing. Its name comes from the large, hamster-like pouches in its cheeks. It is not a true rat, but is part of a uniquely African branch of muroid rodents. In its native Africa, this rat lives in colonies of up to twenty, usually in forests and thickets, but also commonly in termite mounds. It is omnivorous, feeding on vegetables, insects, crabs, snails, and other items, but apparently preferring palm fruits and palm kernels. The Gambian Pouch Rat reaches sexual maturity at 5-7 months of age. It has up to four litters every nine months with up to six offspring in each litter. Males are territorial and tend to be aggressive when they encounter one another, otherwise this rodent is extremely friendly and has become popular as an exotic pet. It is intelligent, social and can be very gentle if handled from an early age. In Africa, it is routinely eaten as bushmeat. It (and other mammals) are referred to by the pidgin name of "beef".

In dem Satz oben steckt viel Wahrheit drin. Heute wurde von mir die 23. Fracht zur Mülldeponie gebracht. Die Frage der Männer, ob ich dort einziehe war bestimmt berechtigt. So trennt man sich von seiner Vergangenheit und es bringt mir immer mehr Freude!

Wohnung gefunden!

Die erste Hürde sei geschafft. Ich habe mein Paradies auf Erden gefunden und werde mich nun auf den Umzug vorbereiten. Manchmal werden auch Träume wahr und für mich wurde ein Traum nun auch endlich Wirklichkeit. Ich freue mich auf meiner neuen Umgebung, Wohnung und mein neues Leben, wie ein kleines Kind. Da ich mit der neuen Wohnung meine Verbundenheit zur Natur nun auch leben kann, freue ich mich auf die Inspiration die dieses neue Leben mir bezüglich meine vorliebe zur erstellen von Collage und dichten, schenken wird. Meine Vergangenheit liegt hinter mir und eine schöne Zukunft eröffnet sich immer mehr.

Ich konnte gestern Abend die Mondfinsternis mit Freunden von mir beobachten und ich habe mir dabei gedacht: auch im Leben ist es nicht anders - es zieht ein Schatten manchmal über unser Leben und es wird dunkel, jedoch zieht dieser Schatten weiter und es wird dann auch wieder Licht und dieses Licht, kann man dann besonders genießen und fällt einem dann auch besonders auf!

Ach, das Leben ist schön!!

27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.............

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Der Planet Mars erscheint sehr hell am Nachthimmel ab August. Sichtbar wird der Planet sein in der Größe eines Vollmondes. Am 27. August ist Mars nur 34.65M Meilen von der Erde entfernt und erscheint für uns wie ein 2. Mond am Nachthimmel. Also nicht verpassen, beobachtet dieses Ereignis am Himmel am 27. August um 00.30.

Dieses Ereignis wird erst wieder im Jahre 2287 am Himmel zu sehen sein.

So freut man sich über gute Noten!
Mein Sohn hat das erste Jahr in der FOS gut überstanden und freute sich ebenfalls.

Es gibt Tage, da freut man sich mit und über seine Kinder. Es gibt Tage die verbringt man mit Angst und Sorgen, wenn sie ihre Flügel ausstrecken und flügge werden! Angst und Besorgt ist man nur darüber, dass sie beim fliegen stürzen und zu Boden fallen. Freude mischt sich manchmal mit ein, dass man es soweit geschafft hat und sie den Mut zum fliegen aufbringen konnten. Dann ist es an der Zeit, dass die Eltern selber Mut aufbringen und sie auch fliegen lässt, egal welche Fluglinie sie auch wählen. Mann kann nur hoffen, dass sie auch den Weg zum Nest manchmal wieder finden um sich dann von einem anstrengenden Flug zu erholen oder Schutz zu suchen wenn in Not.

I FORGOT...

I forgot what life is all about.

I learned that I can love...

I learned that it's okay to mess up.

And it's okay to ask for help.

And it's okay to feel like hell.

to all your friends for a whole day...

I've learnt that sometimes the things
you want most, you just can't have.

I've learnt that the greatest thing
about life isn't the parties or the hook-ups.

It's the friendships,
which means taking chances...

I've learnt that sometimes,
the things we want to forget,
are the things that
we most need to talk about ...

I've learnt that letters from friends
are the most important things
and

that sending cards to friends
makes you feel better.

But basically,

I've just learnt that my friends,
both old and new,
are the most important people to me
in the entire world...

AND

without them,
I wouldn't be who I am today...

Candle in My Window - for Tibet

This will be our opening ceremony for the Olympic Games. And it will begin darkness falls in India on Thursday, Aug 7th 2008.

A GLOBAL VOTE FOR FREEDOM
In about 7 weeks, on the night before the Olympic flame will be lit in Beijing, at least 100 million people all over the world will light a candle for a free Tibet. That aggregate flame will be brighter and will call for freedom in Tibet and in any other place in the world.
That is at least the vision of the organizers of "Candle in My Window for Tibet". They tagged this world event: "Our opening ceremony of the Olympic Games".
Mr. Califa has recently volunteered to assist the organizers in carrying their message: "Take part in our Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. Light a candle for Tibet.
We will light a candle for Tibet because Tibet has become a symbol of freedom.
It is a symbol that represents the natural right of any human being for self determination, freedom of thought, conscience, belief and religion.
Freedom is the most important value for us working for this movement.
The Olympic Games in Beijing is a unique opportunity to focus the world's attention on the annulment of those rights in Tibet and in many other places in the world.
Lighting a candle represents solidarity with the people of Tibet.

In this way we will ensure that our millions and millions of candles are seen and noticed throughout all the time zones of the world.

We are going to create a unique moment when so many millions who otherwise would do very little or nothing for Tibet, or any other cause, would actually do something spiritual and meaningful. And do it together. Our modest objective is to reach 100 million people.

The media, I have no doubt, will pick on the story soon, which will bring more participants, which will bring more coverage, and will raise awareness for the Tibetan Cause. It's a virtuous circle.

This is the craziest thing I've seen in a long time.
For those of you in the 21st century (e.g. blackberry owners), you'll need to look at this on a pc. You also have to get out of your seat and walk away from your computer. People may think you're crazy.
But it's well worth it.
When you look at this picture in a closer look you see its Albert Einstein. But if you stand 15 feet away, it will become Marilyn Monroe.

Rassenunruhen, Kriminalität und Probleme mit der Stromversorgung: Die Vorfreude auf die WM 2010 in Südafrika ist durch zahlreiche Probleme getrübt. Fifa-Präsident Joseph S. Blatter nimmt den Gastgeber nun in die Pflicht. Doch für den Fall der Fälle hat er einen Ersatz-Ausrichter in der Hinterhand.

Politisches Chaos, Angst vor Kriminalität und eine unzureichende Stromversorgung: Fifa-Präsident Joseph S. Blatter nimmt zwei Jahre vor Beginn der Fußball-WM 2010 in Südafrika die Regierung am Kap der guten Hoffnung in die Pflicht und hat für den Fall eines problematischen Konföderationen-Pokals 2009 bereits einen „Plan B“ in der Tasche.

„Ein Jahr würde genügen, um das Turnier in einem anderen Land zu organisieren. Ich wäre ein sehr unvorsichtiger und fahrlässiger Chef einer solchen Institution, wenn nicht in irgendeiner Schublade ein Plan B liegen würde. Ich kann es ja nicht schönreden und sagen, dass auch Plan B und Plan C Südafrika heißt. Es könnte ja auch eine Naturkatastrophe geben. Also haben wir natürlich einen Plan B“, sagte der Boss des Weltverbandes bei der Pressestunde des ORF.
Bereits vor der vom Tod des Österreichers Peter Burgstaller, der beim Golfspielen von Caddys bestohlen und anschließend ermordet worden war, überschatteten Auslosung der WM-Qualifikationsgruppen in Durban im vergangenen November hatte Blatter auch Deutschland nach der hervorragend organisierten WM 2006 als Ersatzausrichter ins Gespräch gebracht. Doch der Deutsche Fußball-Bund (DFB) winkte ab, angeboten haben sich dagegen die USA, die auch aus Sponsoren-Sicht ein interessanter WM-Gastgeber wären.

Präsidentenwechsel ein Jahr vor der WM
Die Generalprobe im kommenden Sommer wird damit zum alles entscheidenden Test, ob die Weltmeisterschaft 2010 tatsächlich in Südafrika stattfinden kann. Allerdings hat die politische Führung im WM-Gastgeberland derzeit ganz andere Probleme als das wichtigste Fußball-Turnier der Welt.
Die anhaltenden Rassenunruhen und die Vertreibung Zehntausender Einwanderer überschatten derzeit die Vorfreude auf die erste WM auf dem schwarzen Kontinent. Nicht weniger dramatisch ist die durch die stetig wachsende Schere zwischen Arm und Reich weiter steigende Kriminalität. Sorgenfalten bereitet zudem die völlig unzureichende Stromversorgung. Auch der anstehende Präsidentenwechsel im Jahr 2009 trägt nicht zur Stabilisierung Südafrikas bei.

Strange but true (bis 1994 hatten sie darum gekämpft, als "weiße" eingestuft zu werden):

Sie wollen nicht mehr farbig sein und reichen deshalb Klage ein: Jetzt hat ein Gericht die rund 10 000 Chinesen in Südafrika tatsächlich als Schwarze eingestuft. Die Einwanderer litten, wie alle Nichtweißen, während der Apartheid unter Diskriminierungen, bis die Demokraten den Rassismus 1994 zumindest offiziell abschafften - die Chinesen allerdings galten weiterhin als "farbig" und bekamen im Gegensatz zu Schwarzen, Indern und gemischtrassigen Menschen keine Entschädigung. Nach dem Grundsatzurteil bekommen auch die Chinesen ihr Geld. - uk

Strange but true (before 1994, the Chinese struggled to be classified as "white")

The ruling yesterday is the culmination of an eight-year struggle by the Chinese Association of South Africa (Casa) to obtain clarity from the Government as to the status of Chinese people since the end of white rule in 1994. Patric Chong, the chairman of Casa, said: “As Chinese South Africans we were officially classified as ‘Coloured’ and suffered under the same discriminatory laws prior to 1994. The logical inference was thus that Chinese South Africans would automatically qualify for the same benefits as the ‘Coloured’ group, post1994. This was not the case and Chinese South Africans suffered a second round of unfair discrimination.”
In a landmark ruling the Pretoria High Court accepted the Chinese as a “previously disadvantaged” group. This means that – at least in legal terms – Chinese South Africans will now be included in the definition of black people in legislation covering lucrative black economic empowerment (BEE) deals.

This is what it's like, when human rights are being abused:
No freedom of the press!

In developed countries, freedom of the press implies that all people should have the right to express themselves in writing or in any other way of expression of personal opinion or creativity. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers"

The "Legal Guidelines for Foreigners Entering, Exiting and Staying in China during the Olympics," released June 2, consist of 57 questions and answers divided into eight categories including transportation, accommodations, medical treatment, intellectual property protection of the Olympics logo, and "special notes." The English translation prepared by HRIC is appended to this Press Advisory.

The Legal Guidelines also prohibit carrying out of China documents or other materials that are classified as "state secrets." The state secrets laws and regulations, however, are extremely broad and provide for retroactive classification, such that everything can potentially be classified as a state secret.

By linking specific illegal activities with vague prohibitions invoking national security, state secrets, criticism of the country, and mass gatherings, these Legal Guidelines can be traps for foreigners. If foreigners do run into trouble, the recent crackdown on lawyers and the lack of a functioning rule of law in China should raise additional concerns. Finally, the spirit of the Legal Guidelines is in tension with official commitments of openness to welcoming the international community to the Olympic Games.

Just bear in mind: Most participants are also considered to be foreigners!
